So about a month ago we had a guest speaker in class, Judy Emerson. She is the Director of Communication at Rosecrance. The conversation she had with the class was more relatable than I first thought it would be. Being that she is in the health field, I kinda thought that this would not be relavant to my Theatre Management and Promotions major; however, she reiterated some of the same things my own professors talk to me about in my theatre classes.
Her main focus was on being a good writer and having consistency in the message you are sending out about your brand. This information is true within every professional field. I think that some colleges are losing the importance of proficient writing skills. Yes Twitter and Facebook and blogging are an important aspect to the ever changing public relations field, yet it still comes down to the basics. If a young professional cannot get their point across in a business professional way, then they will not be given a second look.
Same is true with consistency. Ms Emerson provided some promotional materials that she and Rosecrance hand out to individuals and companies inquiring about the organization. She stressed the importance of having all the materials look like they are from the same "family", meaning the same color story, same fonts, similar artistic appeal, the logo should be present in the same manner. I am told the same things in my graphic design and advertising classes. Although it is important to be innovative and try some new design ideas, it is more important to have the public know and recognize your brand when they see promotional material about it. Consistency is key.
Lastly, Ms Emerson communicated the importance of having public relations within an organization Even if that means that this job is divided among three people who run a non profit, or maybe the organization has their own public relations department, either way PR is essential to communicate effectively with your clients and community. I learned that it doesn't matter what the profession is, the public relations is still a necessity
Here is a short video about the importance of PR

An Apple A Day
Before the 1980’s an apple was just a small, sweet fruit
that we ate; however, now when you hear someone say apple, you don’t just think
about the fruit. Apple Inc. (formally
Apple Computers) has put a whole new twist on technology… and fruit.
I have been a loyal Apple customer for about 9 years
now. I’ve owned an iPod, iPod Nano,
iTouch, iPhone, Mac Book and many Apple accessories. Not only have I liked the company because of
the really advanced products they make, but also I really respected their CEO
Steve Jobs.
One of the most interesting things about Apple is the way
they create brand loyalty with their customers.
They don’t have to worry too much about competition because they are the
competition. They create new, innovative
products before other competitors are even thinking about a new product. They are always a step ahead of the game, and
a lot of their brand awareness and loyalty comes from their marketing.
They have increased creativity on their product commercials
as the company has progressed. Yet even from the very beginning, Apple’s
commercials follow the same clean, uncluttered, simple, bright theme. Check this out; this is the first Apple
promotional video EVER for the iPod.
See how much they have grown with their promotional videos,

Dance the Night Away
Alright all you bloggers, if you've been reading my posts you know that I love to dance and I am minoring in it at UW-Whitewater. What you might not know is that the annual DanceScapes '13 concert is just a month away and it's your only opportunity this year to see UW-Whitewater dance minors perform! The concert is on March 17, 2013 at 2:00 pm and on March 18-19, 2013 at 7:30 pm in Barnett Theatre located in the Greenhill Center of the Arts. Tickets are reasonable and there is even a student discount! But seats fill up fast so don't wait too long, if I were you, I'd order online.
DanceScapes has been apart of the Theatre/Dance Department's season series for many years now. Its a cumulation of student, faculty and guest choreographers, student and faculty designers, and student performers. Its a great way to see the talent UW-Whitewater has to offer. The concert is made up of nine different pieces and they are from all different genres and areas of dance. There will be a few modern pieces, a tap piece, a duet, a performance art piece, along with a few surprises. Basically, there is a style for everyone to enjoy.
Each year the Theatre/Dance Department faculty members bring in a Guest Artist to hold auditions and choreograph a work for the concert. This year we are very lucky to have Joseph Ravens choreograph a performance art dance piece. A neat fact about Ravens is that he is a college graduate from UW-Whitewater, where he majored in Theatre Performance.
Another aspect to DanceScapes is that a majority of the pieces are created by student choreographers and designers. There is an adjudication process involved where a guest panel votes who makes it into the concert. Four student-choreographed pieces made it into the concert this year! I am excited that I am in two of those pieces.
If you have never been to a DanceScapes concert before and/or are interested to hear more about a UW-Whitewater dancer's life- check this out!
Don't forget to get your tickets and come to DanceScapes '13 concert on March 17th at 2 pm and March 18 & 19th at 7:30 pm in Barnett Theatre. You won't be disappointed!

About Me
Hi, I’m Kylee. I’m a
UW-Whitewater student graduating this May with a BFA in Theatre Management and
Promotions and a Dance minor. I’m a
transfer student from UW-Milwaukee, where I majored in Theatre and
Business. Due to a change in major, I
found UW-Whitewater and it was the best move I’ve made thus far in my college
career. After graduation I am moving to
the Kenosha area where I will be pursuing a job in event management.
I was born and raised in Janesville, Wisconsin, which is not
too far from school, and I am the middle child in a house of three girls. Theatre has been my passion from very early
on. In the past I have performed on
stage in over a dozen productions, choreographed two musicals, and designed
hair and make up for a community play.
Now my role in the theatre has changed, I am the publicity assistant to
UW-Whitewater’s Theatre/Dance Department where I create all the marketing and
promotional material for the productions.
When I’m not busy with my major, I am working on my Dance
minor. Dancing is my second passion in
life and I have been doing it for almost as long as theatre. I have participated in many concerts,
including DanceScapes at UW-Whitewater. The
program is small (yet growing) and all of the dancers have become my closest
friends and family.
In my free time, I enjoy playing with my newly adopted
puppy, Gordon, and hanging out with my friends and family. Also, I enjoy both water and downhill skiing. A little embarrassing hobby I have just recently
picked up is crocheting – I really enjoy trying new things! That’s my life condensed
into four paragraphs!
